Open Source Building Management Systems

Building Management System(BMS), also called Building Automation System (BAS, is a complete control system used in a building to monitor and manage the mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical services in a facility. It monitors the services of pumping stations, power, heating, elevators and lights, ventilation and air-conditioning, physical access control, etc.

Building Management System is a combination of software and hardware. A database and sensor are used in BMS, sensors are installed throughout the buildings and they collect the data and sends it to the BMS, and data stored in a database. Sensor and database are connected with the internet. The sensor alerts the BMS in case of any fault, and BMS triggers the alarm. Let see some of the open-source Business Management System.

BEMOSS

BEMOSS is a Building Energy Management Open Source Software (BEMOSS™) is a software platform that is engineered to improve sensing and control of equipment in small- and medium-sized commercial buildings. BEMOSS aims to offer: scalability, robustness, plug-and-play, open protocol, interoperability, cost-effectiveness, as well as local and remote monitoring. This allows BEMOSS™ to work with load control devices from different manufacturers that operate on different communication technologies and protocols. BEMOSS supports the following prevalent communication technologies: Ethernet, Serial (RS-485), ZigBee, and Wi-Fi; and protocols: BACnet, Modbus, Web, ZigBee API, OpenADR, and Smart Energy Profile (SEP) protocols.

openMAINT
openMAINT is an open-source solution for the management of building, installations, movable assets, and related maintaining activities. It is implemented on the asset management framework CMDBuild. It helps to update and organize data that related to inventory and also helps in decision making and operative procedures. It is an excellent ready-to-use solution, it can be configured with base files, processes, reports and dashboards, and workflow. It is designed in such a way that adjusts the environment, it can manage movable assets and the real estate, and the related maintaining. It provides the features of scheduled maintenance, routing, work order management, etc.

BEMSERVER

BEMServer is an open-source solution enabling building stakeholders to deploy a modular, scalable and secure Building Energy Management System by downloading the code directly or working with the BEMServer community.

BEMServer has an existing set of services via its modules and new modules can be developed by 3rd party developers anytime. For building owners and managers through BEMServer, building data gain meaning and empower building actors with new services to optimize energy consumption and comfort.

CITRIS-OPEN BAS
CITRIS provide an open-source building automation system for smaller commercial building (OPEN BAS). This project is designed to help small and medium-sized buildings. It manages energy use and allows building components to connect and communicate. This is excellent software that can handle lighting, water heating systems, and significant ancillary loads. It provides the features of plug and play, open protocol, scalability, remote and local monitoring, robust design. It also provides help to operate building more efficiently by allowing different devices to communicate with each other.

Future technological innovations in the construction industry

Artificial Intelligence for Construction

Artificial intelligence will be highly applied in the construction industry in the future and all possible scenarios will be calculated by machines and the best decisions will be taken by artificial intelligence automatically according to the scenario.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality will give real-time and live updates to management to make effective decisions and improve performance

Building Analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT)

IOT will be highly used in the future in the construction industry and it will make a life of construction engineers much easier, It will minimize the chance of human error

Modular Construction

Modular construction work will be the future of our construction industry and off-site components and modules will be pre-build and applied on-site that will improve performance and decrease cost and timeline too

3D Printing

Recently in china and Dubai, 3d printing multi-story building was constructed with better cost and timeline and ease

Robotics

Robotics will be highly used in the future construction industry

Innovative Materials

self-healing concrete, transparent aluminum, and aerogel insulation are future materials that will be used in industry
